Research

ITQB is an open institution. Permanent research staff are limited to a small number (currently 20) of senior researchers who co-ordinate small autonomous research groups, or laboratories, and supervise training. Most of ITQB researchers are either staff members of other institutions (Universities, State Laboratories) or grantees. They may work at the institute for limited periods, e.g. within the time framework of a research programme.

The laboratories are organized in Research Divisions (Chemistry, Biology, Biological Chemistry, Technology and Plant Sciences). Each Division manages common equipment and facilities, as well as formal teaching and seminar activities.

In 2001, The ITQB, the Gulbenkian Institute of Science (IGC) and the Institute for Experimental Biology and Technology (IBET) joined together to form the first Laboratório Associado (LA) in Portugal. The LA enables the three Institutes to combine fundamental and applied research so that, for example, ideas germinated on the bench can be taken to the level of commercial production and application. The LA also provides advanced training for young research workers and acts as an impartial consultation body for advice on subjects of public interest, such as genetic manipulation of organisms, development of vaccines and general matters of bioethics.

The Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET) , a University-Industry interface institution shares the ITQB building. IBET owns a pilot plant facility, with fermentors and down-stream processing equipment, certified for Good Manufacturing Practices.
