Plant Genetic Engineering

Overview

Our group is hosted by ITQB/IBET, in the laboratory of Plant Genetic Engineering. In our lab we focus on important Portuguese crops making use of biotechnological tools for crop improvement. Our current efforts are mainly directed towards almond and rice, but other crops are also studied, such as fig trees. We use molecular biology strategies for plant characterisation, marker-assisted selection, gene search for the study of important plant agronomical processes, tissue culture and genetic engineering as tools for crop improvement and gene functional studies. In collaboration with other labs we are also conducting work on protein analyses to evaluate the potential impact on human health of genetically modified foods and of fungi living in human environments.
