PhD Programs

A PhD student at ITQB NOVA is part of the research staff. Integrated in research groups, PhD students develop an original research thesis supervised by the lab's PI and closely monitored by the PhD Thesis Committee. PhD Programs at ITQB NOVA also include a limited period of classes, where students from different labs contact each other and together with established researchers learn about different scientific topics and research lines, develop technical and transversal skills, and discuss their current and future paths.

The PhD Program in Molecular Biosciences is a flexible state-of-the-art research oriented program in life sciences. The Program trains students in molecular approaches needed to understand the mechanisms of life.
ITQB NOVA is the coordinating institution.

The MolBioS PhD Program recognizes courses from the following FCT funded PhD scholarship programs:

• Biology at the Host Microbe Interface

• Applied and Environmental Microbiology

• Graduate Program Science for Development

• Advanced Integrated Microsystems 

• Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Applied to Chemistry, Materials and Biosciences

The PhD Program in Plant Biology -Plants for Life aims to train a prominent body of future top researchers in plant sciences able to address key biological questions related to plant growth and development, plant responses to environmental stress, and improvement of crop varieties and plant products.

The Plants for Life PhD Program accepts students from the following FCT funded PhD scholarships programs:

• Graduate Program Science for Development

The PhD in Sustainable Chemistry is a multidisciplinary program in the central/broad area of chemistry, aiming at providing new focus on sustainable research strategies towards the development of new chemical, processes and products in line with current needs of the Chemical Industry and the demands of society.

The Sustainable Chemistry PhD Program recognizes courses from the following FCT funded PhD scholarships programs:

• Catalysis and Sustainability (CATSUS)

The PhD on Bioengineering attracts the highest-performing students and involves exchanges with MIT faculty and their laboratories. Curriculum development as well as teaching activities involves the Portuguese institutions as well as MIT faculty.

IGC PhD Programme in Integrative Biology and Biomedicine. This programme, coordinated by the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, exposes students to a wide spectrum of different topics in the biological sciences.

Champalimaud International Neuroscience Doctoral Programme. This programme, hosted at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, aims to provide students with a foundation to perform innovative and interdisciplinary work in basic or applied neuroscience.
