Genes for drought and salinity tolerance

Speaker: Rana Munns

Abstract:

Water supply drives crop production in most parts of Australia. Yield of cereal crops is directly proportional to rainfall, as they are grown without irrigation. Yield of horticultural crops is limited by the water available for irrigation, and to some extent by soil salinity. I will present the research on breeding for drought and salinity tolerance being conducted at CSIRO. Our approach has been to validate important traits, to search for QTLs and candidate genes, and to introduce these into commercial cultivars.
