Abstract:

After an undergraduate degree in Applied Chemistry (FCT-UNL) and a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering from ITQB, I pursued a professional path in the Biopharmaceutical Industry. I have spent the last 17 years working for different companies, ranging from 4 years as a Scientist at a start-up in Portugal, to 9 years as a Senior Engineer, Group Leader and Technical Development Leader in one of the Industry founders in the Silicon Valley, and the last 4 years in management roles at a leading contract process development and manufacturing company, also in the San Francisco Bay Area. In the first part of the talk I’ll provide an overview of my experience through the different jobs and companies, with focus on contributions to the development of new drugs and new process development and manufacturing technologies. In the second part of the talk I will share some examples of recent contributions from my current group to the development of new manufacturing technologies, particularly in the context of continuous manufacturing, and new biological entities and biosimilars. I will conclude with a brief overview of future trends in the Industry.
