Abstract:
The stereoselective synthesis of even small multifunctional molecules involves a great deal of chemical knowledge and hard work. The inclusion of many functional groups leads to the use of a variety of protecting groups that offer different reactivities. Careful planning is necessary but even then things can go wrong and they normally do. Highlights will include the synthesis of a natural product, an unusual mechanism, a synthesis of an antiviral and a failure.
