Title: From metabolomics to protein structure and function - An overview of NMR applications

Speaker: Manolis Matzapetakis

Affiliation: Biomolecular NMR Lab, ITQB NOVA

Abstract:

NMR is one of the most versatile and complex spectroscopic methods in the arsenal of biomolecular sciences and chemistry. It is often called the universal detector and can be used to study anything from small molecules to protein assemblies, cells and even whole organisms. In this presentation, examples of the uses of this methodology in the lab of Biomolecular NMR will be presented, including the structural and functional characterization of soluble guanylate cyclase and other proteins as well as its applications in the analysis of complex metabolic mixtures for the purposes of disease diagnosis and the investigation of metabolic pathways. Finally an an overview of additional applications will be shown, as a way to showcase the capabilities of the NMR center at ITQB.
