Title: Endoplasmic reticulum stress in the Drosophila eye

Abstract:

A variety of human diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes and cancer, are associated with Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) stress, caused by the accumulation of misfolded proteins in the ER lumen. The Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) is composed by homeostatic signaling pathways that are activated by excessive ER stress. The Ire1 (Inositol-requiring enzyme 1) signaling pathway is an important mediator of the UPR, leading to the activation of the transcription factor Xbp1. We use Drosophila melanogaster to study the role of the UPR and Ire1/Xbp1 signaling in photoreceptor differentiation and in models of retinal degeneration. We will discuss our most recent results on this subject.
