Title: Some science around the skin

Speaker: Sofia Souza

Affiliation: Biomolecular Diagnostic Lab, ITQB NOVA

Abstract:

In this lecture three interesting molecules/set of molecules of the skin will be presented, along with its currently accepted molecular function. In the first part, some conclusions of a physical-chemistry study of the skin barrier will drive our attention to the sphingolipid ceramide. Subsequently during a project to develop a non-invasive method to measure blood glicemia through the skin, our measurements of a set of amino acids in sweat samples will take us to the Natural Moisturizing Factor. And the third skin molecule that was also observed in our 1H-NMR metabolomic analysis of sweat samples is urocanate. To finish, a 3D epidermis tissue cultured at Biomolecular Diagnostics Laboratory of ITQB NOVA will be presented, together with several ongoing projects with this reconstructed skin.
