Medical students’ debut in research

ITQB hosts first ANEM Science Summer School

Oeiras, 20.07.2015

From 20 to 24 of July, ITQB welcomes the first Science Summer School organized by the Portuguese association of medical students (ANEM) in collaboration with ITQB. For five days, sixteen medical students from Portugal and abroad will be joining ITQB researchers in the labs to get their first research experience.

Besides engaging in the ongoing research activities, students will have the opportunity to discuss different aspects of the research practice - motivation, funding, scientific publications, and translational medicine - with researchers and medical doctors from different institutions. The week will end with a round table on the future of science and a lecture on the relation between science and medicine. All afternoon sessions are open.

For ITQB Director, Cláudio M. Soares, “translational research requires that researchers and medical doctors learn to work side by side, so we are very happy that ANEM invited us to host its first Science Summer School”. The idea of this Summer Shool stems from the belief that "too large a number of students complete their medical training without significant contact with research", as stated by the Organizing Committee in the  invitation package sent to the students.

Participants are medical students registered in years 1 to 6 of Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade Coimbra, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências da Saúde da Universidade da Beira Interior, Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Instituto de Ciências Biológicas Abel Salazar da Universidade do Porto,  Moeslem University of Indonesia, Faculty of Medicine/Suez Canal University (Egypt), Turk-MSIC (Turkey), and Faculty of Medicine/Assiut University (Egypt).
