Title: Academia–Industry Collaborations: The Do’s and Don’ts Before You Share, Sign or Start

Speaker: Joana Piriquito Santos, invited by the Innovation Office, ITQB NOVA.

Abstract

This talk draws on real-world experience advising both industry and academic institutions to explore the legal and strategic pitfalls that researchers encounter when sharing materials, engaging with industry partners, or discussing their work publicly. Through concrete case studies, we will examine how the absence of agreements, an overlooked clause, or an informal conversation can silently block patent filings, tie up ownership of results, or undermine future technology transfer.

Joana Piriquito Santos is a founding and Managing Partner of NLP, a boutique intellectual property law firm based in Lisbon. A lawyer and pharmacist by training, she has been working in IP since 2010. Throughout her career, Joana has represented innovative pharmaceutical companies in complex patent matters and has provided research institutions with strategic advice on IP due diligence, licensing, and R&D agreements.

SCANs are weekly seminars that happen every Wednesday at noon by in-house researchers and invited speakers at ITQB NOVA.
