Title: Staphylococcus saprophyticus: insights into a still enigmatic human pathogen

Abstract: Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are part of the skin and mucosa’s microbiota of humans and animals and contribute for the development of the human immune system protecting humans against other more pathogenic bacteria. However, they are also important opportunistic pathogens that emerge upon skin and mucosas barrier break and when the human host is immunocompromised, being thus excellent models for understanding the factors that are in the frontier between health and disease.
Staphylococcus saprophyticus are CoNS associated to urinary-tract infections (UTI) in young woman, but key questions regarding this human pathogen remained unanswered, namely what is the origin of the UTI infections caused by S. saprophyticus? What are the clonal types associated to disease? Do these bacteria disseminate globally? What are the vehicles of S. saprophyticus dissemination? What are the genetic and environmental factors associated to disease development? We will present recent data that contributed to clarify some of these questions.
