Title: GMO Research in Portugal: Science Meets Regulation

Speaker: Luís Gramacho

From: Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA / GMO Department)

Abstract: Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are transforming fields such as healthcare, food production, and environmental science. Alongside their benefits, they raise important biosafety and regulatory challenges that every researcher must understand.

In Portugal, the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) oversees all activities involving GMOs, ensuring compliance with biosafety regulations and the protection of public health and the environment.

For researchers working with GMOs, understanding the full regulatory pathway—from project submission to completion—is essential.

Luís Gramacho, Head of the Environmental Risk Assessment and Emergency Unit at APA, will join us to provide practical guidance and clarify how to align innovative research with legal requirements.
