Bringing science closer to everyone, raising awareness of research and innovation, and promoting science and education: these are the main objectives of the project “BRIDGES for Science: Engaging Researchers, Schools, and Citizens for a Sustainable Future in Europe,” led by ITQB NOVA. Joining the Institute, located in Oeiras, are i3s—the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health at the University of Porto—and Ciência Viva—the National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, including six science centers.

In 2026 and 2027, this consortium will organize hundreds of activities in Portugal with the aim of bringing science closer to citizens, with a strong focus on engaging new generations and communities from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds and ethnic minorities. Citizens will be invited to visit places such as laboratories, universities, and science centers, not only in major metropolitan areas but also in smaller cities and rural areas.

The European Researchers’ Night, to be held at eight locations across the country, will mark the culmination these activities and serve as a meeting point for researchers and diverse audiences. The consortium bears the added responsibility of being the only one funded by the European Commission to organize the event over these two years.

“We are very happy to bring this team together again for another two years to bring science to the people. The activities will reach their peak in September during the European Researchers’ Night, and we hope many institutions will join us in this celebration that belongs to everyone. Science in Portugal deserves as much visibility as possible, and citizens deserve more opportunities to talk with scientists,” says Ana Sanchez, project coordinator and Vice Dean of ITQB NOVA.

In Oeiras, the European Researchers’ Night will take place in the gardens of the Marquês de Pombal Palace on Friday, September 25, organized by ITQB NOVA in partnership with the Municipality of Oeiras. It will be an afternoon and evening celebrating science, featuring various scientific institutions and fields of science, with activities designed for all ages.

The BRIDGES project follows EU-EMBRACES, developed by this same consortium in 2024–25, during which 300 activities were carried out – including visits by researchers to schools, participatory debates, events focused on the inclusion of communities with limited access to science, and other initiatives celebrating science – reaching more than 35,000 people.

Aproximar a ciência de todos, dar a conhecer a investigação e a inovação e valorizar a ciência e a formação: são os objetivos principais do projeto “BRIDGES for Science: Engaging Researchers, Schools, and Citizens for a Sustainable Future in Europe”, liderado pelo ITQB NOVA.
