Title: Omics inputs for non-model organisms’ outputs

Abstract:

Several omics are now available for the collective identification, characterization and quantification of pools of a wide diversity of biomolecules. The integration of results coming from different approaches starts to be reality and the study of non-model organisms is now possible, namely those handling unique biological processes. This is the case of starfish which arm regeneration involves the functional re-growth of the central nervous system. In the Proteomics of Non-Model Organisms Laboratory the combination of proteomics and metabolomics resulted in the identification of biological functions of starfish specific tissues and of their potential involvement in the regeneration process. Other area of focus in the Laboratory relates to the identification of novel targets for therapeutics and biomarkers for diagnosis, by exploring microbe-host interactions with relevance in veterinary and medical contexts. In particular, we are interested in understanding the mechanisms behind the enhanced pathogenicity of an infectious lineage of Staphylococcus epidermidis, and identifying biomarkers for the early diagnosis of tuberculosis.
