Title: Managing Science at ITQB

Speaker: Alexandra Veiga

Abstract:

During the last two decades there were deep changes in national policies for science, mainly triggered by the European integration. A considerable growth in the number of research centres, researchers, and facilities has occurred, leading to a remarkable increase in the scientific production.

At the same time, however, scientific systems in the European framework and globalised world have become more and more complex, with a multiplicity of available opportunities for research funding, transnational cooperation, networking, and mobility, but open under a strongly competitive environment. To deal with this new reality, science has to be managed in a professional manner, so that existing resources are effectively used, opportunities are not lost, and high quality applications will fit the requirements of the funding agencies.

Managing science at ITQB will be a challenge, involving the biggest possible number of players. It is crucial to gain a deep knowledge on conventional sources of science funding, to look for alternative opportunities, and to identify trends in research. Promotion of scientific cooperation, setting up strong networks that will influence research priorities will play an important role in achieving ITQB goals.
