Title: Gene expression regulation in Eukaryotes: E pur si muove!

Speaker: Pedro Fevereiro

Affiliation: Pedro Fevereiro Lab - Plant Cell Biotechnology

Abstract:

Are we aware of all the processes that regulate gene expression in eukaryotes (understood as a process leading to the synthesis of a protein)? And which are the ones that are currently known? How is it possible that with so many levels of regulation and so many possibilities, you still get a functional protein? What if we multiply all this by about 30,000 genes? How do is this concert kept in order to allow the existence of multicellular life? How to use this knowledge to modulate gene expression in a controlled way? I will not try to answer all those questions. I will just alert for the complexity of some processes and the possible uses of some of the existing knowledge to breed better crops.
