Title: Tick born diseases in Portugal farms: prevalence and diagnosis

Speaker: Abel G. Oliva

Affiliation: Biomolecular Diagnostic Laboratory

Abstract:

Babesiosis and Theileriosis are tick-borne diseases widespread in tropical and sub tropical regions with high economic impact worldwide. In continental Portugal there are an estimated total of ~3.9 million food animals with economic importance. From them ~2.8 million are ovine and caprine, and 1.1 million are bovine, which are susceptible to tick infestation and consequently, to infection with tick-borne diseases (TBD) including babesiosis and theileriosis. However this situation, the epidemiology status of the TBD in the country is unknown. The Biomolecular Diagnostic Laboratory is working in the study of these diseases and has evaluated the incidence in some regions of the country. Also the group is developing standard and new diagnostic methods for the study of these parasites, for application in field and in-vitro studies.
