World Science Day for Peace and Development

November 10th is the World Science Day for Peace and Development. For 2014, UNESCO selected the motto “Quality Science Education: ensuring a sustainable future for all”, a cherished topic at ITQB.
The world is changing fast. We live in an overpopulated planet facing climate change with mostly unpredictable consequences, in terms of health, food and environment. This means dealing with food security (enough food for everyone) and food safety (amenable for human consumption), with energy and material requirements, and with the prevention and treatment of infectious and other diseases, while preserving the planet resources for future generations. In a word this means sustainability, the requirement to sustain life on this planet.
Ensuring sustainability requires innovative solutions. But innovation does not materialize from thin air. Innovation requires creative people equipped with knowledge and a critical mind and, as a society, we have the obligation to train the next generations in the best possible way. A quality science education is undoubtedly our best bet for ensuring a sustainable future for all.
Celebrating this year’s World Science Day for Peace and Development, ITQB commits itself to continue working for a more sustainable world through high quality research and education.
