Title: The social life of Streptococcus pneumoniae in biofilms

Speaker: Carina Valente

Abstract: Streptococcus pneumoniae (or pneumococcus) is a major human pathogen associated with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Despite this, asymptomatic nasopharyngeal colonization in multicellular aggregates (biofilms) is the natural lifestyle of this bacterium. Co-colonization, defined as simultaneous colonization by more than one pneumococcal strain, has only recently begun to be studied. Several lines of evidence indicate that intra-species interactions occur between pneumococci but how these affect colonization is not known. Moreover, the mechanisms associated with intra-species interactions in biofilms remain poorly characterized. In this presentation I will address these questions and the work that we have been developing to answer them.
