Title: Tailored and cost-effective engineered solutions for applications in life sciences

Abstract:

The Bioengineering Microfabrication service (BEµFAB) - created in 2021 - aims to provide services of design and fabrication of new devices and tools for applications in life sciences, so researchers can answer complex biological questions and accelerate their scientific findings. Creative and tailor-made solutions can be used for the investigation of a wide range of biological models from in vitro studies with biomolecules, cells or organs, to small in vivo models. Creativity, innovation, collaborative and disruptive thinking – adding value to science – is the BEµFAB work field towards improved skills, ideas and techniques.

The BEµFAB fosters cost-effective design optimisation and fabrication through services of consultancy, 3D prototyping, microfluidics and micropatterning. The current set of methods includes technical CAD, computational fluid dynamics, liquid handling automation, 3D printing, xurography, CO2 laser cutting, CNC micromachining, surface (bio)chemistry, programming of open-source microcontrollers, simple electronics and generic workshop techniques. The BEµFAB physical spaces reflect the service workflows and consist of a 35m2 precision workshop – the Making Lab – and an ISO7 30m2 cleanroom for microfabrication and platforms for liquid handling automation.

During this seminar, I will show some examples of implemented workflows and products such as user-friendly flow-control systems, rapid prototyping of microfluidics devices and micropatterning for (bio)chemical interaction studies.
