Title: Beneficial plant-bacteria interactions: a chemical call

Speaker: Juan Ignacio Vilchez

Abstract: The application of microorganisms as biofertilizers and biocontrollers is leading to a revolution in sustainable treatments in agriculture. However, in many cases the efficiency and benefit of the application in the field does not reach the promising results recorded in the laboratory or greenhouse. Behind this drop in performance are issues of resilience and formulation, but above all there is a general lack of environmental contextualization of the product. To bridge this gap, it is necessary to advance in the understanding of the mechanisms of signaling, contact and symbiosis behind beneficial interactions. The application of a multidisciplinary approach including metagenomics, metabolomics, molecular biology, biosafety analysis or product formulation, is beginning to shed light on the key aspects to successfully apply this innovative biotechnology in the coming years.
