Title: Paper highlight - Reassessment of the distinctive geometry of Staphylococcus aureus cell division

Abstract: The gram-positive pathogen Staphylococcus aureus is generally thought to divide in three alternating orthogonal planes over three consecutive division cycles. Although this characteristic mode of division was proposed over four decades ago, the molecular mechanism that ensures this geometry of division has remained elusive. In this seminar I will describe how we have used super-resolution microscopy to question the proposed model for S. aureus cell division and show that, contrarily to what was previously thought, division in three perpendicular planes is not the rule in this organism.
