Protein Nanopores

Elisa is investigating the interaction of surface-modified gold nanoparticles with the alpha-hemolysin biological nanopore. She has engineered the alpha-hemolysin protein to obtain different chemical and physical environments within the pore cavity that she then exploits in her studies.

The nanoparticle-nanopore interaction is further investigated by using cyclodextrins in conjunction with the alpha-hemolysin nanopore. These noncovalently attached “adaptor” molecules, reside in the lumen of the alpha-hemolysin nanopore and alter it’s properties.

Elisa is financially supported by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) through grant SFRH/BD/40431/2007.
