The first StartUp Research NIMSB/ITQB NOVA Masterclass will be broadcast live and dedicated to the role of intellectual property in building successful innovation ecosystems.

Abstract: The role of intellectual property in building a thriving Startup ecosystem is increasingly vital in today's knowledge-driven economy, particularly for Lisbon's growing innovation landscape. As Portugal's Research Centres and Start-Up scenes continue flourishing with initiatives like those promoted by NIMSB’s and ITQB NOVA’s TTOs, Startup Lisboa and the Web Summit, intellectual property has emerged as a key factor to sustainable competitive advantage in the United States. In this lecture, Professor Dipanjan Nag, a global expert in intellectual property strategy and technology transfer, will explore how research centres and Start-Up ventures can leverage IP not merely as a defensive strategy, but also as a strategic asset that drives growth and attracts investment, a critical consideration for Portuguese ventures seeking to scale beyond local markets. The lecture will be on overall strategy for protecting ideas with IP, increasing the value of an organization, technology transfer as a strategy for Universities and Start-Ups to be self-sustainable, and IP as a career.
