The Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) Unit is pleased to invite you to the Unit Open Labs
If you are a 3rd year Bachelor student or Master student with interest in structural biology applied to health-related research projects… Join Us!
Registrations https://www.itqb.unl.pt/impact/activities/open-lab-day
During this session an overview will be given of the different research groups and projects ongoing in our MX-Unit as well as a visit to our laboratories.
Join us and take this opportunity to talk with our researchers and to learn about the different projects being developed at our Unit, and check the possibility to develop your future research work with us.
Program Outline
09h30 – Welcome coffee
10h00 – General presentation of the MX-Unit and the IMpaCT project
10h15 – Projects presentation by our PIs
11h00 – Visit to our labs
11h30 – Projects presentation by our PIs
12h15 – Closing session

The Macromolecular Crystallography Unit at ITQB, coordinated by Professor Maria Arménia Carrondo, is a top research group that aims the study and characterization of biological molecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, to a resolution higher enough to help elucidating the detailed mechanisms by which these macromolecules carry out their functions in living cells and organisms. Our scientific projects are quite diverse and are mainly Health-related.
The MXU works in 5 different field of research:
Structural Genomics Lab (PI: Maria Arménia Carrondo)
Protection Mechanisms against Oxidative Stress (Célia Romão)
Sulphur Metabolism (João Vicente)
DNA Repair (Elin Moe)
Structural Biology Lab (PI: Carlos Frazão)
Industry and Medicine Applied Crystallography Lab (PI: Pedro Matias)
Structural Virology Lab (PI: Colin McVey)
Membrane Protein Crystallography Lab (PI: Margarida Archer)
The MX-Unit combines structural biology methodologies, such as X-ray crystallography and SAXs, to determine the three-dimensional structures of molecules.
Moreover we are also building our expertise and knowledge on Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) through the European Horizon 2020 project IMpaCT – Imaging Life from Molecules to Cells, which is coordinated by two PIs from our Unit, Pedro Matias and Célia Romão.
We have established collaboration with three research Centres with proven track record and expertise in the methodology and applications of Cryo-EM: the José Maria Carazo team from the National Centre for Biotechnology of the Spanish Research Council (Spain); the Sarah Butcher team at the University from Helsinki (Finland), and the Michael Elbaum and Sharon Wolf team from the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel).
