Abstract

Grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) is an annual grain legume plant with high adaptability to unfavourable environments, which cultivation spread over three continents. One of its promising features is the remarkable resistance to several important legume diseases, which may be useful in the breeding of related major legume crops. Fusarium wilt, caused by the soilborne pathogen Fusarium oxysporum (Fo) is one of the most destructive diseases among legume species.

To identify new sources of fusarium wilt resistance and detect resistance-associated single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), a grass pea worldwide collection was screened for resistance under controlled conditions against Fo f. sp. pisi race 2 and genotyped with high quality SNP markers. Combining the phenotypic with the genotypic data, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were conducted to search for genomic regions involved in the control of fusarium wilt resistance. The results revealed several SNPs associated with resistance along the chromosomes, indicating an oligogenic control.

With this approach, new molecular tools to assist in resistance precision breeding in grass pea, and eventually in other related grain legume crops can be developed.
