Abstract:

We showed that Caloric restriction (CR), through Neuropeptide Y (NPY) receptors activation, stimulates autophagy in rodent neurons (Aveleira et al., PNAS 2015; Ferreira-Marques, Aging 2016). Moreover, NPY or CR ameliorates the progression of a neurodegenerative disorder - Machado Joseph Disease (Duarte-Neves et al., 2015 Hum Mol Gen; Cunha-Santos et al., 2016 Nature Comm).

Our recent results also show that NPY reduces hallmarks of aging in human cells from progeria patients, that have premature and accelerate ageing phenotype.

All these data suggest that NPY act as a Caloric restriction mimetic and, by activating NPY receptors, counteracts ageing related mechanisms.
