Title: Why is the European rabbit such a fascinating species? Insights on the processes of speciation and domestication

Speaker: Nuno Ferrand

Affiliation: Faculty of Science University of Porto

Abstract: The European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) originated in the Iberian Peninsula and for most of its history was confined to this region. In historical times initiated a human-mediated expansion across most of the world that eventually ended in its successful domestication in the Middle Ages. Today, the European rabbit is both a key-species in Mediterranean ecosystems and a relevant domesticated animal in human economies. In this talk we show how the genetic and genomic analyses of wild and domesticated rabbit populations are contributing to a better understanding of both the fundamental processes of speciation and domestication, and how this can influence research in other species.
