Title: Healthy plants, healthy animals, healthy people

Speaker: Carlota Vaz Patto

From: PlantX Lab, ITQB NOVA

Abstract: The only way to guarantee a healthy life for the entire population depends on a true integrative vision of the “One Health” concept, in which plant health must be one of the pillars. The work developed at the ITQB NOVA PlantX Lab, to support the development of legumes that are more resistant to pests and diseases, is an example of how plant research actively contributes to “One Health”. We will explain our work in this area using as an example the group's most recent publication on the identification of sources of resistance to the common bean rust fungus. The development of more productive and resistant varieties contributes to improving plant health and thus human (and animal) health, by enabling more balanced diets. This work also promotes better environmental health, as by producing more resistant legume varieties, the farmer is able to reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Only by protecting each organism - plant, animal, person or environment - are we truly protecting everyone.
