Title: MicroMBT: Discovery and training of microbial biocatalysts for biomass conversion using Moving Bed Technology (MBT) – a project report
Speaker: Elin Moe
Abstract: ITQB NOVA was a partner of this project which was coordinated by researchers at UiT – the Arctic University of Norway and funded by ERA-net marine biotechnology (through FCT in Portugal) in 2016. The plan was to use a collection of >100 genome sequenced marine bacteria from the Arctic region, and Moving Bed Technology (MBT) as tools to increase the value of marine rest raw materials (e.g. fish meal). MBT is a known technology used in the fish farming industry, and makes use of bio beads onto which microbes establish communities (biofilm) and convert waste water into non-toxic products in a recirculating system. Here, the idea was to let the isolated bacteria establish microbial communities onto MBT bio beads, and train them into micro factories for conversion of fish meal to high value products. Water and lipid phases from spent medium was going to be collected and screened for potential products. In summary, the MBT method was going to be used to convert cheap marine biomass into new products. The role of ITQB was to study enzymes which was identified as crucial in this process. We focused on collagen degrading enzymes, and I will here describe the work we did, and how we are planning to continue this work in new projects.
