Title: Glycomics and glycoproteomics as tools to investigate biological systems

Speaker: Júlia Costa

Abstract: Glycosylation is a common post-translational modification of proteins that plays multiple functional roles in biological systems. Specific glycosignatures are usually characteristic of cells and organisms and may become deregulated as consequence of homeostasis imbalance, thus serving as disease biomarkers. Structural characterization of protein glycosylation and also other glycoconjugates is usually challenging in view of high structural diversity. Multiple complementary techniques for structural elucidation are used that include lectin or antibody detection, high performance liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry and glycosidase sensitivity. In this talk, relevant applications, including unveiling glycosignatures of extracellular vesicles or characterization of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein N-glycosylation will be presented. Elucidation of total glycan profiles as well as protein site-specific glycosylation may open novel perspectives for the investigation of biological systems functionality.
