Abstract:
Streptococcus pneumoniae (also known as the pneumococcus) is a leading cause of several infectious diseases worldwide such as otitis media, pneumonia, bacteremia and meningitis. Pneumococcus colonizes asymptomatically the human upper respiratory tract, a key event for transmission, disease and evolution. Pneumococcus is often shielded by a polysaccharide capsule which is antigenically diverse and a major virulence factor. To date, 98 capsular types have been described. For the past two decades pneumococcal conjugate vaccines targeting a limited number of capsular types (up to 13) have been introduced in several countries. I will discuss how we are using multiple approaches to study pneumococcal ecology and how it is affected by the use of vaccines.
