Title: Emerging techniques for mass spectrometry
Speaker: Robert Tongue
Affiliation: Waters, Manchester, UK

The presentation will begin by discussing some of the fundamental aspects of ion mobility mass spectrometry (IMS), the commercial equipment available including the new Waters Synapt G2-S, and some examples of the use of IMS for the analysis of peptides, proteins, and protein complexes. We will then discuss the idea of peak capacity and how this is an important factor for consideration for the analysis of complex samples, such as in a shotgun proteomics experiment. Peak capacity can be improved with techniques such as IMS, ultra high pressure liquid chromatography (UPLC) and two-dimensional liquid chromatography. The presentation will finish by discussing the use of hydrogen-deuterium exchange reactions for the study of protein structure, and how a new fully automated nanoAcquity HDX system from Waters greatly simplifies investigations of this type.
