Title: AutoMated synthesis and biological evaluation of metal complexes
Speaker: Ramon Vilar
From: Faculty of Natural Sciences, Imperial College London
Abstract: In this seminar, Professor Vilar will explore the potential of metal complexes in chemical biology and medicinal chemistry, including their use as optical probes for cellular imaging and as phototoxic agents against cancer cells and bacteria.
About the speaker: Professor Ramon Vilar is Professor of Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry and Vice-Dean for Research at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Imperial College London.
He holds a degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a PhD from Imperial College London (1996), where he later became Lecturer.
He led a research group at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) between 2004–2006 and held an EPSRC Leadership Fellowship to study non-canonical DNA structures.
His current work focuses on metal-based complexes for therapeutic and imaging applications, as well as on the development of molecular receptors for detecting and removing toxic species in water.
His group combines synthetic chemistry, automation, biophysics and computational methods to address health and environmental challenges.
The International Seminar Series – “And Now for Something Completely Different…” hosts international researchers to present their work and engage with the community, once a month.
