Abstract:
The information obtained with the powerful mass spectrometry methodology is fundamental for structural characterization of chemical and biochemical species. Besides accurate mass determination it is possible to perform controlled fragmentation of molecular ions, which allows obtaining detailed structural information for comparative identification and characterization of organic compounds, peptides and proteins.
The ITQB/IBET Mass Spectrometry (MS) Laboratory is a research and service Laboratory, included in the Analytical Service Unit, which is certified as OCDE Good Laboratory Practice. Additionally, the MS Laboratory is one of the nodes of the Mass Spectrometry Portuguese Network. The main objective of our work is the implementation and development of MS methodologies to be used as applications to the study of biological systems, in particular with biotechnological and biomedical applications. These methods have been used to support academia, research projects and studies contracted mainly with the pharmaceutical industry.
