Abstract

For many young and not-so-young scientists the idea of creating their own business is somewhat attractive but only a minority will actually decide to do it. In this presentation the process of (bio)entrepreneurship will be scrutinized in terms of the critical success factors that will ultimate dictate the fate of such (ad)ventures. Special attention will be given to the entrepreneur him/herself, to the business opportunity and to the identification of the necessary resources and competencies. Taking a practical approach to the process of new venture creation, a framework for the definition of the business model will be presented and discussed. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the current biotech start-up business models will be analyzed in what really matters: how one can make money out of them.
