Grain legumes are among the most important crops worldwide, providing protein and other essential compounds for human and animal nutrition.

However, fungal diseases are major constrains for their yield, being powdery mildew one of the most widespread and damaging air-borne legume pathogen. The resilient Lathyrus spp. grain legumes present high and durable resistance against different biotic and abiotic stresses, including powdery mildew disease, being a promising source of resistance for a more sustainable agricultural production.

In this seminar, a genomic approach to understand the genetic architecture of the response to powdery mildew infection in Lathyrus cicera (chickling pea) will be presented. This study elucidates the disease resistance molecular basis of L. cicera and provides useful genetic tools for Lathyrus spp. breeding that may be translated to related economically more important legume species.
