Title: Caution: Plant Quantitative Genetics at work!

Speaker: Carlota Vaz Patto

Abstract:

Quantitative genetics is a statistical branch of genetics concerned with the inheritance of those differences between individuals that are of degree rather than of kind, quantitative rather than qualitative. Quantitative traits differ from qualitative ones in that the individuals of a progeny cannot be classified into discrete phenotypic classes, showing instead a continuous variation, what makes impossible to use a Mendelian approach. The most interesting agronomic traits are normally quantitative (yield, durable disease resistance, quality) and because of that difficult to grasp by plant breeders.
In this talk I will focus on the concept of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) analysis used for the identification, location and effect estimation of genes controlling quantitative traits. As examples I will address the different projects I am involved in where extensive field research, chemistry and food technology, phytopathology and molecular and gene expression analysis are conjugated through different statistical approaches.
