Title: Synthesis of natural products analogues with antibacterial activity
Abstract: In an era were antibiotics are easily available, it is easy to assume that before they were introduced into the clinics, anyone with an infection would eventually succumb to its effect. However, due to the efficient response of our innate immune system, there have always been survivors even to the most lethal diseases. Nevertheless, mortality rate was considerably higher than nowadays.
The increasing bacterial resistance is making it increasingly difficult to take successful antibacterial treatment for granted. The resistance problem is being faced by antibiotic rationalization policies, as well as research on new antibacterial drugs.
The current seminar will focus on the synthesis of Hygromycin A analogues. Hygromycin A is a natural antibiotic that possess excellent in vivo activity against the spirochete responsible for swine dysentery.
In the last part of the seminar, I will present the results obtained in the synthesis of new chemical probes based on the AI-2 structure using different synthetic strategies. These probes will allow the identification of new AI-2 receptors. AI-2 is a signalling molecule for bacterial inter-species communication. Despite being widely expressed, at the moment only two classes of protein receptors for AI-2 have been identified. The discovery of new AI-2 receptors will be relevant for the development of new and effective strategies to manipulate bacterial behaviours.
