Title: Advancing the Manufacture of Human Stem Cells for Cardiac Regenerative Medicine
Speaker: Margarida Serra
Abstract: Stem cell-based therapy has emerged as a promising treatment option for patients with heart failure and acute myocardial infarction. Today, strong business opportunities exist for companies looking to pursue stem cell-based therapies but the challenges are manifold including the lack of expertise in product development, characterization, and specialized cell manufacturing. Our work aims to overcome this hurdle by devising bioinspired and integrated strategies to improve the generation and functionality of cell therapy products. The key research line has been focused on the development of novel cell culturing strategies that recreate environmental conditions excelling stem cell proliferation as well as their differentiation/maturation into functional cardiomyocytes, through metabolic and process understanding. In particular, we have been designing processes based on expertise in 3D cell culture, bioreactor technology, co-culturing approaches, and microencapsulation strategy.
Noteworthy, we also applied robust multi-parametric techniques including advanced “-omics” technologies as complementary analytical tools to support bioprocess understanding and optimization as well as to unveil the mechanism of action of cell therapy products.
