Title: Opportunities and Challenges in R&D for Biologics Discovery and Development
Speaker: Paula Alves

Abstract:
We are living in exciting times with an amazing explosion in our understanding of human biology, providing insight into how we can prevent and treat disease. Approaches for preventing, controlling and curing many serious conditions like cancer, heart disease and several infectious diseases are advancing rapidly, and these are increasingly in the form of biologics.
While advances in technology in the biopharma industry over the past decade are very promising, the rate of change in clinical practices, over the last 40 years, has been relatively slow. This is partially due to the slow rate of improvements in manufacturing technologies leading to affordable biologic therapies but also to the concerns in the regulatory arena, related with the lack of robust pre-clinical models and highly demanded and exquisite analytical technologies for biologics characterization.
I will discuss and present several case studies where, by having a multidisciplinary and integrative approach, our Science Driven Research Unit has been bridging with R&D teams in Pharma and Biotech and contributing to the advance of biologics discovery, production and characterization.
