Title: Chemoenzymatic strategies towards bioactive phenylpropanoid glycosides

Abstract: Phenylpropanoid glycosides are plant secondary metabolites representing a group of more than 160 compounds often showing broad farmacological spectra and low toxicity. The core structure of these compounds consists of glucosylated derivatives of 2-phenylethanol in which the glucose moiety is often decorated by glycosylation or by esterification with derivatives of cinnamic acid. Approximately a quarter of these compounds contain β-D-apiofuranose in their structures and have trivial name acuminosides.

The multi-step synthesis of these acuminosides requires several glycosylation reactions, which are key transformations in their synthesis. Glycosylation reactions are still a major challenge in glycoscience. For this reason, it is important to develop new glycosylation techniques that will, among others, meet the requirements of the principles of green chemistry. This presentation will be focused on sustainable approach to phenylethanoid glycosides and their analogs using zinc salts and / or glycosidases. There are some other substantial transformations in the synthesis of phenylpropanoid glycosides and I will try to shed some light on how lipases can help us in this difficult task.
