Title: Impact of the conjugate vaccines on the pneumococci community

Speaker: Ana Cristina Paulo

From: Molecular Microbiology of Human Pathogens Laboratory, ITQB

Abstract:

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a commensal bacteria that inhabits the human nasopharynx. It is commonly found among children younger than 6 years old. Worldwide, pneumococcus has been identified as a major cause of otitis media and pneumonia and has also been associated with bacteremia and meningitis.

Although pneumococcus is characterised by a high diverse antigenic capsule (to date over 95 serotypes have been described), the potential to cause disease is, among other factors, serotype specific.

In 2000 a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was introduced against seven serotypes and, in 2011 a an expanded 13-valent vaccine was introduced.

In this seminar I will discuss what was the impact of the hepta-valent vaccine upon the community of pneumoccocus isolated from children attending day-care centres and, discuss how this information, along with the use of mathematical models, can help us understand further changes undergoing the recently introduced 13-valent vaccine.
