Title: Plant cell cultures for the production of recombinant proteins

Speaker: Rita Abranches

Affiliation: Plant Cell Biology Lab, ITQB NOVA

Abstract:

I will give an overview on Molecular Farming – the use of plant based systems for the production of recombinant proteins and high value molecules - and then present the projects that are currently being developed at the Plant Cell Biology Laboratory. We are using plant model and non-model species, as well as diatoms, for the production of proteins or high value compounds. Particular emphasis will be placed on strategies to maximize recombinant protein expression in plant cell suspension cultures, including epigenetic modulation of transgene expression and genetic engineering of cell cultures for reduced proteolytic activity.
