Title: Sampling in the Midle Atlantic Ridge: diving at 2000 meters

Speaker: Luís Gafeira Gonçalves

From: Cell Physiology & NMR Lab, ITQB

 Abstract:

In June, I integrated a scientific expedition to the Atlantic Ocean deep sea, EMEPC's 2014 Atlantic Ocean Expedition. The campaign took place north of the Azores islands (47°N 23°W), where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is crossed by the Maxwell Fracture. My participation in this expedition resulted from the effort of Francisco Pereira do Valle to set up a collaboration between the Estrutura de Missão para a Extensão da Plataforma Continental (EMEPC), four research groups at ITQB (Cell Physiology & NMR, Microbial Development, Inorganic Biochemistry and NMR, Applied and Environmental Mycology), and the Microbiology Lab at BIOCANT. The objective of our endeavour is to discover new micro-organisms from the Deep Ocean using the ROV LUSO robot (with a diving capacity of 6,000 meters).
I will present a logbook of the campaign with lots of photos and videos; showing daily life on board, the available equipment the different expertises of the team and of the Portuguese navy crew, and how ITQB groups can profit from this collaboration with EMEPC.
