Short abstract:
Our research group have applied genomics technologies, such as microarrays and whole genome sequencing (WGS), to a range of translational microbiology projects and case studies. Working with our colleagues at St George’s Hospital, we have utilised real-time clinical application of WGS to investigate potential outbreaks of bacterial pathogens, such as MRSA, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterococcus faecium, to help inform infection control measures. WGS has also guided patient management and treatment of XDR-TB cases and has been utilised more diagnostically to investigate mystery parasites observed in CSF by microscopy. Microarray-based approaches have been used for highly multiplexed diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections, as proof-of-concept for future point-of-care devices, as well as surveillance of pneumococcal vaccine impact by detection of multiple serotype carriage in ongoing vaccine studies worldwide.
