Title: Recruitment of C4NADP-malic enzyme from hausekeeping roles: on the identification of molecular alterations

Abstract:

It is assumed that the neofunctionalization of C4 enzymes from housekeeping activities into the C4 pathway is associated with modifications of their catalytic and regulatory properties. For example, it is proposed that the role of NADP-ME has changed from being important in mid-veins of C3 species to supplying CO2 to RuBisCO in BS cells. In order to characterize the evolutionary transition of C4 enzymes, we characterize post-translational modifications (PTMs) of C4 proteins crucial for their function. The functional importance of those PTMs are being investigated in vitro by comparative analysis of the properties of recombinantly produced C4 enzymes (natural variants and mutagenised).
