Title: Surprising regulatory findings identified by analyzing the global RNA structurome in pathogenic bacteria

Speaker: Jörgen Johansson

Dr. Johansson is a Full Professor at Umeå University (Faculty of Medicine) and researcher in the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS). Dr. Johansson is a lead expert in the field of Infection Biology, where he has made decisive contributions to the understanding of virulence determinants of pathogenic bacteria. Recently, his team's research is focused on understanding stress regulatory mechanisms and RNA-mediated regulation in the bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes.

Abstract:  As an introduction, Dr. Johansson will give a short historic aspect of the importance of RNA-structures for regulatory mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria. Next, he will describe a DMS-MaPseq method that was used to determine global RNA-structurome in bacterial pathogens. With this method, novel regulatory mechanisms were identified, including an mRNA:mRNA interaction essential for bacterial virulence.
