Researchers Ana Filipa Louro and Daniela Salvador from the Stem Cell Bioengineering Lab were present at the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles Annual Meeting (ISEV2021), held from 18 to 21 May 2021.

Ana Filipa Louro presented an oral communication entitled “Pluripotency-associated miRNAs underlie the superior in vitro bioactivity of hiPSC-derived extracellular vesicles in mediating cardiac repair”, selected for the session “At The Heart of EVs”. The research involves the study of the bioactivity of extracellular vesicles (EV) secreted during hiPSC-cardiomyocyte differentiation, for the selection of cell biofactories for therapeutic EV production. EVs are currently being studied as an alternative therapy to cell transplantation in the context of heart failure.

Daniela Salvador, on the other hand, shared the research carried out at the lab on the valorization of expired platelet concentrates, that currently hold no therapeutic significance, in a poster entitled “Empowering the therapeutic potential of clinically expired platelet concentrates: optimization of platelet-derived extracellular vesicles isolation process“. “We are studying ways to process these products, turning them into sources of EVs with important physiological properties, that can be used as therapeutic agents per se, or as vehicles for targeted delivery of active pharmaceutical ingredients“, says Daniela.

In its 10th edition, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles annual meeting is the premier international conference of extracellular vesicle research, covering the latest research in exosomes and microvesicles. ISEV2021 featured presentations from the top researchers in the field and provided opportunities for talks from students and early career researchers.
